Husk ( Installation View at the Evanston Biennial in the Evanston Art Center, Evanston IL)
2006
spun sugar, acrylic, steel
30"x60"x30"
Husk is a temporal sculpture, a large cloud of air-spun sugar suspended in a clear, five feet long vitrine. Over the course of three days or more, depending on humidity, the original structure of spun sugar deteriorates--entropy sets in as air escapes and the sugar crystallizes. Repeated visits to the unfolding process of Husk eventually reveal the hidden interior within the deflated shell. As the original cloud begins to resemble a cowhide or dried membrane, this piece explores the conflation of the abject and the beautiful and ultimately becomes a memento mori monument, leaving behind only granules of sugar on the floor. The liminal spaces revealed during the transitory stages of Husk are tenuous moments that are intended to reflect on the fragile, mutable and fugitive state of our interior landscape.
